Death in Profile (Paperback)

Despatched in 2 business days.

The genteel facade of London's Hampstead is shattered by a series of terrifying murders, and the ensuing police hunt is threatened by internal politics, and a burgeoning love triangle within the investigative team. Pressurised by senior officers desperate for a result a new initiative is clearly needed, but what? Intellectual analysis and police procedure vie with the gut instinct of 'copper's nose', and help appears to offer itself from a very unlikely source a famous fictional detective. A psychological profile of the murderer allows the police to narrow down their search, but will Scotland Yard lose patience with the team before they can crack the case? Praised by fellow authors and readers alike, this is a truly original crime story, speaking to a contemporary audience yet harking back to the Golden Age of detective fiction. Intelligent, quirky and mannered, it has been described as 'a love letter to the detective novel'. Above it all hovers Hampstead, a magical village evoking the elegance of an earlier time, and the spirit of mystery-solving detectives. Guy Fraser-Sampson is an established writer best known for his series of Mapp and Lucia novels which have been featured on BBC Radio 4 and optioned by BBC television. This is his debut work of detective fiction, and the first title in the Hampstead Murders series.

Customer Reviews

I love discovering new authors I haven't read before. Guy Fraser-Sampson is a writer I am so pleased to have been introduced to and been given the chance to read this his first debut at detective fiction. First of all I was so drawn to the attractive book cover, a single lit street lamp silhouetted in the darkened night sky and mysterious drops of blood splattered on both covers. Very intriguing and as it turns out - a real ingenious idea of a story which really worked for me. "Death in Profile" is a real cosy 'whodunnit' mystery that harks back to the traditional era of detective fiction (think Sherlock and Agatha Christie) that is missing so much from todays books. Guy has captured this atmosphere perfectly - I might be showing my age here but it was like I could actually hear Ian Carmichael talking when Peter was going through his Lord Peter Wimsey stage. Throughout the book I truly felt I was kept involved in the solving of the murders and you actually feel as if you're there helping with the clues. Even though this book has an old school approach it still has the contemporary modern twists and turns and is very intelligent, inventive, compelling and quite quirky. If you're looking for lots of violence and guts and gore from a crime novel then this isn't the book for you but once you've finished reading it you will feel like you've been wrapped in a warm duvet which you never want to leave. I can't wait now to read Guy's second book in this series of the 'Hampstead Murders' the recently released "Miss Christie Regrets" all published by the exciting Urbane Publications. It's already had rave reviews and I expect it once again to be exactly my cup tea! A warm 5 stars from a very happy reader!
