Synopsis

`We were somewhere around Barstow on the edge of the desert when the drugs began to take hold. I remember saying something like, "I feel a bit lightheaded; maybe you should drive ..."'Hunter S. Thompson is roaring down the desert highway to Las Vegas with his attorney, the Samoan, to find the dark side of the American Dream. Armed with a drug arsenal of stupendous proportions, the duo engage in a surreal succession of chemically enhanced confrontations with casino operators, police officers and assorted Middle Americans. This stylish reissue of Hunter S. Thompson's iconic masterpiece, a controversial bestseller when it appeared in 1971, features the brilliant Ralph Steadman illustrations of the original. It brings to a new generation the hallucinatory humour and nightmare terror of Hunter S. Thompson's musings on the collapse of the American Dream.

Customer Reviews

A short book but large omission up until now of my reading of classic American fiction. A highly recommended read this is a wonderfully descriptive description of drug crazed goings on in America, combining elements of the classic American road trip. A rollocking account of the USA on the cusp of the change from the heady freedom and optimism of the sixties to the stagnation and retrenchment of the 1970’s. Aside from a brief section in the middle when the author seems bogged down in a miasma, it is funny, outrageous and at times laugh out loud. This should be required reading for anyone interested in classic twentieth century American literature.

This is pure adrenaline- (and other substances) fuelled literary chaos – the pinnacle of Thompson’s gonzo style that he developed as a journalist for Rolling Stone. It’s theoretically an account of he and his lawyer attending a motorcycle race in Las Vegas, but in reality it’s nothing less than an anarchic, mind-bending peek inside the carnage that Thompson caused wherever he went, full of bad people and worse drugs, hallucinations and violence and destruction, described in some of the most distinctive prose ever committed to a page by a true literary genius. Completely indispensable.

Super stylish, chemically altered Rauol and his attorney Dr Gonzo zip into Vegas to report on a motorcycle rally for a magazine and wreak total havoc while ingesting massive amounts of drugs. It’s a mind-bending ride with two lunatics you kinda love.
