Product Synopsis

The eight-year-old boy had vanished from the car and - as if by slick, sick magic - had been replaced by a note on the steering wheel...'You don't love him'...At the height of summer a dark shadow falls across Exmoor. Children are being stolen from cars. Each disappearance is marked only by a terse note - a brutal accusation. There are no explanations, no ransom demands ...and no hope. Policeman Jonas Holly faces a precarious journey into the warped mind of the kidnapper if he's to stand any chance of catching him. But - still reeling from a personal tragedy - is Jonas really up to the task? Because there's at least one person on Exmoor who thinks that, when it comes to being the first line of defence, Jonas Holly may be the last man to trust...

Customer Reviews

DO read BLACKLANDS and DARKSIDE, Belinda Bauer's previous two novels, before starting this. Then you won't miss any of the many continuing threads which add so much to this book. As with the other two books this one builds to an exciting and unpredictable finish. Bauer's characters are as believable as ever and I particularly enjoy her portrayal of the children in the story. Those with disability are treated with respect and empathy. She does for children with physical disability what Mark Haddon did for children with autism. Without wishing to spoil the book, Bauer may have said goodbye to the village of Shipcot with this volume. But if she hasn't, I'll gladly buy a fourth novel in this series. In fact what ever Belinda Bauer writes next, I'm up for it! I give her 5/5 for this one.
