Synopsis

Nedra and Viri are a married couple whose favoured life is centred around dinners, ingenious games with their children, enviable friends and near-perfect days passed skating on a frozen river or sunning on the beach. But fine cracks are beginning to spread through the shimmering surface of their life - flaws that will eventually mar the lovely picture beyond repair. Seductive, witty, tender and resonant, Light Years is an exquisite novel of lost lives and the elusiveness of happiness.

This is for me the all-American master treatise on marriage. Similar to Updike's Maples Stories in scope, Salter shows how the fabric of union frays and then disintegrates over time. This portrait of Negra and Viri is packed with elation and disappointment, and the constant negotiation that takes place between a couple who can't agree where they should be going. Sympathetic and otherwise, they are both knowable and foreign: three-dimensional, flesh and blood characters who struggle to make sense of where the wedding band has taken them.

Niven Govinden - 06/06/2013

This portrait of a New York marriage dissolving, sexual desire and new relationships, is created with Salter’s inimitable brand of linguistic precision and searching intelligence. Both devastating and hopeful, the author beautifully exposes our tendencies – how we try to love, and fail, and try to again.
