Product Synopsis

This is the story of John Self, consumer extraordinaire. Rolling around New York and London, he makes deals, spends wildly and does reckless movie-world business, all the while grabbing everything he can to sate his massive appetites: alcohol, tobacco, pills, pornography, a mountain of junk food and more. Ceaselessly inventive and thrillingly savage, this is a tale of life lived without restraint; of money, the terrible things it can do and the disasters it can precipitate.

This novel is a blurred murky look at '80s culture (or lack of) as the protagonist John Self stumbles around New York and London, trying to make money out of bad films and vice. Amis presents a gritty portrait of two cities choked with greed and the pursuit of cheap thrills as Self loses himself to drink, drugs, pornography, junk food and cigarettes. Interestingly this novel features the author himself as a character, as well as a host of other tongue-in-cheek nods to the world of literature, art and film. - Rachel
