Product Synopsis

Arthur Winthrop is a middle-aged headmaster at an elite prep school in Vermont. When he is arrested for an act that is incredibly out of character, the strait-laced, married headmaster confesses to a much more serious crime. Arthur reveals that he has had a passionate affair with a scholarship student called Betsy Pappas. But Betsy is a fickle and precocious teenager. When she switches her attentions to a classmate, Arthur's passion for Betsy turns, by degrees, into something far darker. Now Arthur must tell the truth about what happened to Betsy. But can Arthur's version of events be trusted - or is the reality much more complex and unnerving? The Headmaster's Wife is a dark, sinuous and compelling novel about marriage and obsessive love.

Customer Reviews

The Headmasters wife This book is written in three parts the first Acrimony is were Arthur the headmaster of a boarding school is found running naked through central Park in New York. The police pick him up and the first part involves his description of his life , a criminal act and the situation leading up to this. . The second part Expectations is through the eyes of his wife. You slowly begin to understand why Arthur’s mental health has deteriorated and his alienation from both his wife and son soon becomes apparent The third part After is the conclusion and for me was a little disappointing. The story slowly unfolds in the second half and to give too much information would give the story away suffice to say I found this book very disturbing in the first part and doubt I would have continued with it had I not been reviewing it . Greene has an undoubted skill in description and apart from one, his characters are portrayed as very unlikeable and it was hard to feel empathy for either of them. . The book is extremely well written however and deals with grief, loss and love in equal measure.
