Synopsis

WINNER OF THE 2015 COSTA FIRST NOVEL AWARD THE BRITISH BOOK AWARDS BOOK OF THE YEAR 2016 'Modern classics in this genre are rare, and instant ones even rarer; The Loney, however, looks as though it may be both' Sunday Telegraph If it had another name, I never knew, but the locals called it the Loney - that strange nowhere between the Wyre and the Lune where Hanny and I went every Easter time with Mummer, Farther, Mr and Mrs Belderboss and Father Wilfred, the parish priest. It was impossible to truly know the place. It changed with each influx and retreat, and the neap tides would reveal the skeletons of those who thought they could escape its insidious currents. No one ever went near the water. No one apart from us, that is. I suppose I always knew that what happened there wouldn't stay hidden for ever, no matter how much I wanted it to. No matter how hard I tried to forget ...

Customer Reviews

I've bought this book after reading a good review in The Guardian were it was positioned as a gothic novel. And yes, it is a gothic novel. I am deliberately not telling you a summary of the content, you can find those online anyway. The book is not too long but it is off to a slow start. For me the first 130 pages are a bit too much for what is actually going on. Then it picks up pace but slows down occasionally. The language is to some extent epic and the author describes the landscape and characters to a decent amount. That actually adds to the atmosphere of this book. The climax is not worth the build up to it. You expect something massive, like a revelation but for me it was a disappointment. Overall I was not too impressed with the book. It is for sure not a bad book but it's not outstanding either. I would not recommend it without adding that you should manage your expectations. The label gothic is deserved but it's also a drama/crime/thriller. If you have some time to slot in a good book albeit not a great one you can read The Loney. It also fits the autmnal season we are about to experience. Bookkeeper
