Synopsis

The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. The black sign, painted in white letters that hangs upon the gates, reads: Opens at Nightfall Closes at Dawn. As the sun disappears beyond the horizon, all over the tents small lights begin to flicker, as though the entirety of the circus is covered in particularly bright fireflies. When the tents are all aglow, sparkling against the night sky, the sign appears. Le Cirque des Reves The Circus of Dreams. Now the circus is open. Now you may enter.

Two powerful masters of magic decide to play a game. They each take a child and teach them in their ways of magic, with the intention of pitting them against each other to see who will win. The rules of the game are not clear, nor is how one wins, all Celia and Marco know is that they have to out-do some other unknown and that they have no choice in the matter. The Night Circus is a delight to the imagination; though existing only in words, the circus is a feast for the senses. Everythng is described in so much detail, in such language, you are immersed in wondrous sights, sounds, scents, tastes and textures, making it a luxurious read. The language is so beautiful, the sentences demand to be read aloud. Morgenstern paints with words, and she has painted a masterpiece.
