Synopsis

When Professor Arthur Renfrew discovers a new moon around Jupiter and identifies it as a Star Station from an Alien race the Earth refuses to believe him. That is until the Aliens invade the Earth. The invasion is disrupted by a deranged robot with multiple personalities trying to protect its adopted family of ravenous rodents. D.G, an Alien of the rebel forces mistakenly 'rescues' Julian Renfrew, the Professor's no good fire-bug son, and via a matter transfer port in a London allotment shed escapes with him to Zrad. Julian is followed by the Good Christian Girl, Angela Breen, who rescues him from certain death at the hands of a mad axeman, the incompetent ex-fireman Sidney Weddell. Who are the Zradians? Why should we not be afraid of the rodents? Who is Tzu Wu and why is he so important to Richard Byrde? Will Bates and Fish ever complete a spoken sentence each? Whatever happens on Earth and on Zrad it is certain that Julian Renfrew will complain about it. Too scared to run away and too cowardly to fight, Julian is trapped in a world he doesn't understand with friends who terrify him. This is his story. Short description.

The Reluctant Hero - book one of a spoof Sci-fi trilogy telling the tale of a scumbag and a Good Christian Girl who become involved in a violent interplanetary war. Spattered with stereotypes, cliches and a mad Robot the story tumbles into interstellar chaos. Will the Earth survive the Zradian invasion?

James Apps emigrated to the Isle of Sheppey after wandering around the Antipodes for half his life. Born in the Medway Towns, and spending much of his time as a Fitter and Turner in Kent he boarded a ship in Southampton and sailed to New Zealand where he worked in the trade with a hop across the Tasman to South Australia and Tasmania during the mid 1970's. It was as a result of an industrial injury, and being forced to give up working as a tradesman that he began writing and reading poetry in public, in pubs and hals and on Community Radio. In 1995, encouraged by an insightful consultant at the Takapuna job centre in Auckland he enrolled at Auckland University as a mature student, although some might say - ripe - and gained a Masters in English Literature. Deciding that family ties in the UK were a stronger attraction than poverty in New Zealand James returned in 2000 with Sophie the cat, living with his Sister and Brother in Law and then Friends until crossing the Swale to live on the Isle of Sheppey. He worked as Teaching Assistant in Sittingbourne and is now retired pursuing his interests of writing, painting and taking part in local activities.
