Synopsis

En su libro Bernardita Llanos M. examina la ilustracion espanola a traves del surgimiento de una ideologia nacionalista que sostiene la necesidad del colonialismo. Distintos sectores adaptan la ilustracion a sus aspiraciones politicas, sin embargo, comparten el interes comun por la recuperacion del pasado colonial y sus heroes. A traves del analisis del distintos discursos, la conquista y el descubrimiento del America aparecen como temas recurrentes en la mitificacion del pasado y el caracter nacional que exiben las distintas visiones politicas. Esta parte de la historia imperial se realiza en los escritos de filosofos, intelectuales y dramaturgos populares, quienes definen la identidad nacional a traves de empresas heroicas en ultramar. Asi, Colon se convierte en el portavoz y Cortes en el forjador del primer estado colonial moderno, cuyo poder y autoridad reside en la propagacion del cristianismo y la civilizacion.

El autor: Bernardita Llanos M. es profesora asistente de Literatura Latinoamericana y Co-Coordinadora del Programa de Estudios Latinoamericanos en Denison University. Recibio su Doctorado en Literaturas y Linguisticas Hispanicas y Luso-brasileras por la Universidad de Minnesota. Ha escrito numerosos articulos sobre teatro, cronicas y artes visuales del siglo XVIII espanol y latinoamericano.
