Synopsis

Die vorliegende Arbeit behandelt das Erstlingsdrama Der Hofmeister oder Vorteile der Privaterziehung von Jakob Michael Reinhold Lenz, das 1774 mit Hilfe des jungen Goethe veroeffentlicht wurde. Sie verbindet eine eingehende Textanalyse mit einer historischen Betrachtung und will zeigen, dass es Lenz um Saekularisierung, Emanzipation und Glueck geht, dass der junge Autor sich jedoch auf die Schultern seiner Zeitgenossen und Vorgaenger stellt, um die Probleme seiner Zeit auf neue, eigenwillige Weise in den Blick zu bekommen. Auf dem Hintergrund von Holbergs Deutschfranzosen, Shakespeares Romeo and Juliet und des spaeter entstandenen Urfaust tritt seine emanzipatorische Sicht der Generationskonflikte und Standesunterschiede sowie der Lehrertragoedie und der mit der Liebesthematik verbundenen sexuellen Probleme besonders hervor. Der 21jaehrige Lenz wetteifert mit Holberg, Shakespeare und Rousseau, waehrend Goethe sich in seiner ersten Faust-Fassung an Lenz als Rivalen wendet.

The Author: Angela Hansen erhielt ihren M.A. von Columbia University und promovierte mit einer Dissertation ueber Lenz' Hofmeister am Graduate Center der City University of New York. Sie ist als Deutschlehrerin taetig und arbeitete als Uebersetzerin u.a. fuer die Research Foundation for Jewish Immigration in New York an einem internationalen biographischen Handbuch mit, das der Emigration aus Zentraleuropa in den Jahren 1933-1945 gewidmet ist.
