Ce livre propose une reevaluation de la Lettre a d'Alembert, texte neglige, mais dont l'importance reste considerable pour la comprehension de l'oeuvre. L'analyse de la refutation par Rousseau des propositions avancees par l'article Geneve de d'Alembert permet de cerner la nature du desaccord entre Rousseau et l'Encyclopedie sur la question du role et de la place du theatre dans le programme philosophique et d'evaluer, dans le contexte de l'oeuvre, les repercussions de l'enorme controverse soulevee par la critique du theatre par Rousseau. Texte de rupture, la Lettre a d'Alembert constitue une etape fondamentale dans la carriere litteraire de Rousseau qui permet au Citoyen de Geneve de formuler un nouveau mode d'ecriture et de proposer une redefinition du statut de l'auteur des Lumieres.

L'auteur: Ourida Mostefai est professeur associe de francais a l'universite de Boston College. Elle a edite un volume d'articles: Lectures de la Nouvelle Heloise / Reading La Nouvelle Heloise Today (1993) pour l'Association Rousseau ainsi que deux numeros de la revue Studies in Eighteenth-Century Culture (31 & 32). Elle prepare actuellement en collaboration avec John C. O'Neal un recueil d'etudes consacrees aux textes autobiographiques de Rousseau: Approaches to Teaching Rousseau's Confessions and Reveries.
