Synopsis

L'auteur y compare les valets de Moliere et ceux qui apparaissent dans les comedies ecrites entre 1685 et 1715. Il essaye de montrer notamment dans quelle mesure l'evolution du personnage du valet reflete, satiriquement, la realite sociale de l'epoque et aussi se rattache a une tradition litteraire qui remonte jusqu'a Plaute. Ce faisant, il deborde le cadre du theatre comique du XVIIe siecle et nous entraine dans l'etude de documents divers de cette periode: romans, lettres, memoires...et meme les notes du lieutenant de police d'Argenson.
