Synopsis

In this classic drama, a young prince is condemned for all eternity to be shut away from his country and his birthright lest the horrors prophesied for him come true. Banished to a secret world high in the mountains and cut off from the sun, he can only dream of a life reversed: of palaces, empires, freedom - and revenge - Helen Edmundson's new version of Calderon's richly poetic, epic masterpiece, first performed in 1635, explores illusion, reality, fate and destiny against the backdrop of a mythical kingdom. Starring Dominic West from HBO's "The Wire" in the lead role it premieres on 13 October 2009 at Michael Grandage's Donmar Warehouse, currently the most celebrated theatre in London's West End.

Helen Edmundson adapted Anna Karenina, The Mill on the Floss and War and Peace for the much-loved touring theatre, Shared Experience. She also wrote the National Theatre's enormously successful dramatisation of Coram Boy, seen there at Christmas 2005 and 2006. Calderon (Pedro Calderon de la Barca 1600-81), a later contemporary of Shakespeare, Cervantes and Lope de Vega, is the foremost dramatist of the Spanish Golden Age and author of over a hundred plays of all kinds.
