Fernandez-Vazquez es director del Programa Graduado de Inmersion Intensiva en frances y espanol en Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, donde ensena tambien literatura y cultura hispanicas. Recibio su doctorado de la Universidad de Kentucky, especializandose en la literatura hispanoamericana. Ha publicado numerosos articulos en revistas y colecciones criticas sobre la literatura cubana escrita fuera de Cuba y es autor del libro La novelistica cubana de la revolucion: testimonio y evocacion en las novelas cubanas escritas fuera de Cuba 1959-1975.
