Synopsis

Si pres de deux siecles ont laisse la reputation de Mme de Stael intacte, il n'en est pas de meme pour Mme de Genlis qui malgre quelques etudes recentes reste meconnue des critiques et du grand public. Cet ouvrage a pour but de rapprocher et de contraster les idees de ces deux femmes auteurs qui ont vecu a la meme epoque. Il s'efforce de mettre en evidence le systeme de pensee qui etait a la base de leurs reactions vis-a-vis des evenements historiques de leur epoque. Cette etude propose en outre une lecture nouvelle des romans historiques de Mme de Genlis par l'observation des traits romantiques presents dans ses ouvrages. Elle met en evidence le fait que Mme de Genlis qui affirmait hair le romantisme, etait en realite fortement influencee par ce mouvement. Finalement, une comparaison entre Corinne et Delphine et La Duchesse de la Valliere et Madame de Maintenon permet de souligner l'importance de l'histoire pour les deux ecrivains et la maniere differente dont ils l'ont representee dans leur oeuvre.
