Ian and his wife, Samantha, were the proud parents of a beautiful seven-month old baby boy, Max, when Sam died suddenly from a heart attack. Overnight he became a sole parent. Ian gave up his job at an electrical firm to look after Max, who is now seven. Ian shares what he learned after being thrown into the parenting deep end - his story is told with humour and pathos and will be of help to any new father, single or not. The book is an account of one man's struggle to deal with the sudden and dramatic loss of his wife, at the same time giving up his job as young successful business executive to take care of his seven-month-old son. An abrupt and remarkable career and life change. As well as covering the pain, shock and devastation of being widowed, Parenting with Balls also gives an account of what it's like to be suddenly thrust into a world dominated by women. Ian emphasises that while it felt like the most natural thing in the world - for him to look after a child - it wasn't instantly accepted by other people or by other parents in general. The book will hopefully start to engage the reader into perhaps thinking differently about men as parents in the future.

At just 28-years-old Ian was a successful married man with a young son. A fast paced career had seen him rise to running the operation of a GBP15,000,000 turnover business. At the same time he had a beautiful wife, Samantha, and a wonderful little boy, Max. But during their first family holiday tragedy struck and Sam died of a sudden heart attack at just 30-years-old. Ian was obviously devastated and left widowed with a sevenmonth- old boy to care for. Choosing to give up his career and concentrate on looking after his child full- time, Ian eventually found that writing helped him grieve, and that others were interested in what he had to say. As well as contributing to well known parenting magazines, websites, the BBC and other media outlets he created his own parenting blog. Single Parent Dad proved to be very popular amongst UK parent blogs, and still counts thousands of regular visitors from all over the globe. Ian Newbold lives in the Staffordshire, England with his son Max. As well as writing and being a full-time dad, Ian works as a freelance business consultant, likes to make things out of wood and tries to pretend he is still sporty by playing cricket and hockey. He writes the blog 'Single Parent Dad' and describes himself as a 'widowed parent, raising a child alone, as well as generally making a nuisance of myself. Prone to bouts of genius and modesty failure.'
