Wie wirkt sich das Internet mit seinen Moglichkeiten der virtuellen Mobilitat auf die physische Mobilitat aus? Das Institut fur Mobilitatsforschung (ifmo) hat im Jahr 2000 das Fraunhofer-Institut fur Systemtechnik und Innovationsforschung ISI, Karlsruhe, mit einer reprasentativen Befragung von deutschen Internetn- zern beauftragt. Die weitere Entwicklung und die moglichen Auswirkungen a- gewahlter Internetanwendungen sollten erfasst werden. Dabei standen fur uns als Institut fur Mobilitatsforschung die Auswirkungen auf die physische Mobi- tat im Zentrum des Interesses. Die Ergebnisse dieser Studie liegen bereits in der Buchreihe des ifmo vor (Zoche, Kimpeler, Joepgen 2002). Ein solches Thema aber nur aus deutscher Sicht zu behandeln, ware kurzsi- tig gewesen. So war es ein konsequenter nachster Schritt, die gewonnenen - kenntnisse zur Diskussion zu stellen und sie mit den Erfahrungen anderer W- senschaftler zu vergleichen - vor allem aus den USA, einem Land, das uns in der Entwicklung von Trends immer einen Schritt voraus ist. Mit der internationalen Konferenz "Auswirkungen der virtuellen Mobilitat" brachte das ifmo Wissenschaftler verschiedener Fachdisziplinen sowie Praktiker zusammen, die bereits konkrete Erfahrungen mit den bisherigen Auswirkungen von Internetanwendungen gemacht haben und vor diesem Hintergrund ihre - wartungen an kunftige Entwicklungen formulierten.
