Synopsis

This collection aims to give a chronological insight into the evolution of conduct literature, from its early roots in the Renaissance period through to the dramatically different role that women played at the emergence of the 20th century.

William St Clair is at Trinity College, Cambridge. His books include That Greece Might Still be Free: The Philhellenes in the War of Independence (1972), The Godwins and The Shelleys: A Biography of a Family (1989) and Lord Elgin and the Marbles (3rd rev.ed 1998) Irmgard Maassen is at the Freie Universitat of Berlin. She has published on women's literature and co-edited (Sub)Versions of Realism: Recent Women's Fiction in Britain (1997)
