Synopsis

A travers l'oeuvre du marquis de Lezay-Marnesia (1735-1800), cette etude veut montrer que le sentiment de la nature dans la seconde partie du XVIIIe siecle n'est pas seulement une mode litteraire ni un regain d'interet pour l'agriculture, mais qu'il existe une ecole de pensee autonome: l'ecole du retour de la noblesse a la campagne, dont l'ideal est la bienfaisance et dont le mode de gouvernement est l'harmonie et la sensibilite. Le livre analyse aussi comment cette ecole de pensee prend dans les milieux proches de l'aristocratie une connotation politique, voire ideologique, dans la mesure ou elle offre a une noblesse en crise d'identite les moyens de se donner une nouvelle definition et donc une nouvelle legitimite.

Roland Bonnel enseigne la litterature francaise du XVIIIe siecle a Dalhousie University, Halifax. Il a publie des articles sur Montesquieu, Vade, l'epistolaire, l'agro-poetique de la noblesse et la recherche de l'age d'or. Il vient d'editer, chez Peter Lang, un livre sur les intellectuelles du XVIIIe siecle. Il travaille actuellement sur les utopies au Siecle des Lumieres. Se specialisant dans l'histoire des mentalites, il s'interesse aussi a l'architecture des jardins et aux manifestations de l'ennui en France au XVIIIe siecle.
