English introduction by Carol Poore, German original text by Hermann Schlueter. Einleitung von Carol Poore in englischer, Originaltext von Hermann Schlueter in deutscher Sprache. Hermann Schlueter was an outstanding journalist and historian of German-American socialism. In Zuerich he co-edited the Sozial- demokrat in the 1880's and in New York he was chief-editor of the Volkszeitung from 1890 to 1919. In his book he surveys the earliest utopian socialists, writes extensively about Wilhelm Weitling's activities, discusses the press and various organizations founded by German socialist immigrants, etc. Schlueter's book is a valuable historical source because he often quotes from documents and newspapers which are unavailable today.
