Synopsis

This fascinating book explores life in Humberside and surrounding areas such as Beverley, Barton and Grimsby during the war years. The author draws upon the extensive archives of war-time records relating to the activities of the police, civil defence and other volunteer organizations during the war as well as the photographic archives of the "Hull Daily Mail". Amongst other subjects, it considers the Home Guard, evacuees and European refugees, 'Holidays at Home', rationing, war savings and other campaigns. "Humberside at War" describes how Humberside adapted to the changing circumstances of a community at war.
