Synopsis

Las sergas del muy esforzado caballero Esplandian representan uno de los libros mas leidos de su epoca, tanto en europa como en el llamado Nuevo Mundo. Susan Giraldez demuestra como Garci Rodriguez de Montalvo adapta el genero caballeresco con esta primera continuacion del Amadis para elaborar una obra propagandistica que apoya la ideologia de los Reyes Catolicos en la unificacion de la peninsula iberica y en su empresa de conquista cristiana del Mediterraneo y, eventualmente, de las Americas. Este estudio tripartito sobre el contexto historico, la tecnica narrativa y los personajes del Esplandian senala como esta obra refleja la transicion del mundo medieval al mundo renacentista al elaborar un nuevo modelo que propone la transformacion del caballero andante feudal en un caballero cristiano leal a una monarquia catolica. Destaca la influencia del Diario de Colon en la creacion de la reina Calafia en los ultimos capitulos de Las sergas y la influencia de Las sergas en el pensamiento de los conquistadores y en la onomastica del Nuevo Mundo.

La autora: Susan Giraldez es profesora de lengua y literaturas hispanicas en la Universidad del Pacifico en Stockton, California desde 1994. Se doctoro en la Universidad de California Santa Barbara en 1992. Tiene publicaciones en Espana y los Estados Unidos. Ademas de sus investigaciones sobre literatura hispanica, escribe y edita libros de texto y otros materiales para la ensenanza de espanol como lengua extranjera.
