Synopsis

"Money well spent" is a large-scale study of the outcomes of public expenditure of #250 million a year on housing adaptations in England and Wales. This research is the result of a partnership between housing and occupational therapy professionals and researchers. It presents, for the first time, evidence about the effectiveness of housing adaptations for older people and disabled people of all ages nationally. Based on interviews with disabled people, including children and their parents, in seven local authorities in England and Wales, the report includes: evidence about how housing adaptations improve the health, quality of life and opportunities for disabled people and their families, and can contribute to preventative strategies; proposals, based on user views and professional observations, of ways in which housing adaptations may be made more effective still; and information useful in determining best value and budget allocation in health , housing and social services. "Money well spent" should provoke debate around, and increase understanding of a valuable service that helps to deliver a whole raft of current policy objectives.
