Synopsis

X-rays, fluoroscopy, ultrasound, computerized tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and positron emission tomography (PET) scans - the use of medical imaging has become a routine part of healthcare today. In January 1896, though, when the news of Wilhelm Roentgen's discovery of X-rays swept around the world, the very idea of looking inside the living body was inconceivable. However, by the 1920s, this technology was commonplace. Over the course of the century, X-rays, floroscopy, and the newer inventions transformed the practise of medicine. In this history of medical imaging, the author explores the range of these technical developments and their consequences for medicine and society. Through anecdotes and illustrations, the book shows how X-rays and their successor technologies became part of the texture of modern life and culture. They gave courts new forensic tools, undermined Victorian sexual sensibilities, provided plots for novels and movies and gave artists from Picasso to Warhol, new ways to envision the human form. But the death of doctors from over-exposure to radiation taught a grim lesson about technology - inventions that save lives can also destroy them.
