Synopsis

A great deal has been written in recent years about nationalism. Yet scholars remain sharply divided as to a coherent theoretical model of this phenomenon and many have called for further empirical research. This volume pursues this line of inquiry, examining a variety of geographical contexts within the English-speaking world, including Australia, Canada, India, the United Kingdom and the United States at different historical periods. These interdisciplinary studies combine elements of sociology, political science, history, literature, and cultural studies.

Rachel Hutchins-Viroux is an associate professor at Nancy-Universite (France; distance learning English department). Originally from the United States, she mainly studies American nationalism and national identity. Her focus, in her work and in her doctoral dissertation (2005), has been on the construction and transmission of nationalism and national identity through the teaching of history in the United States. Jeremy Tranmer is an associate professor at Nancy-Universite (France). Originally from the United Kingdom, he wrote his PhD on Communism in Britain. His interest in the radical left has led him to examine its different approaches to British and English nationalism. He has also studied how nationalism has been represented in British popular music.
