Synopsis

The Quest for a Democratic World reviews and analyzes the search for a fair and equitable society, from the first documented efforts made during classical antiquity through the present. However, it primarily focuses on the way we view our own society and what constitutes a democratic way of life. Maurice Rotstein maintains that the failure of communism has obscured the fact that our own society has serious problems that demand attention. In order to understand these problems, he investigates past movements for social and political reform as well as recent developments in Europe where communism has seen its demise. Rotstein argues that these developments can help us understand the imperfections of our own political and economic systems, which in turn will allow us to re-evaluate efforts that are aimed at improving society. Providing both the historical depth and the political analysis necessary to comprehend current affairs, this book will introduce students of history and political science to critical issues for understanding democracy and the world we live in.
