In den Beitragen dieses Sammelbandes aus dem Forschungsverbund "Stadt 2030" werden im Spannungsverhaltnis zwischen Wissenschaft und kommunaler Praxis die Wechselbeziehungen zwischen Region und Kommune diskutiert, werden Formen zukunftiger regionaler Stadtgestalt, Stadtorganisation und Stadtpolitik gesucht. Konkurrenz oder Arbeitsteilung und Kooperation zwischen Stadten, "weiche" Vertragsregelungen oder "harte" regionale Institutionen sind die Pole, zwischen denen die Regionalisierungsprojekte aus "Stadt 2030" die Zukunftsperspektiven lokaler Selbstverwaltung in deutschen Stadten entwickeln.

Der Forschungsverbund "Stadt 2030" mit 21 Projekten in 33 Stadten, wissenschaftlich begleitet vom Deutschen Institut fur Urbanistik (Difu), wurde im Jahr 2000 vom Bundesministerium fur Bildung und Forschung (BMBF) ins Leben gerufen, um Stadtforschung und Stadtpolitik uber unmittelbare Tagesprobleme hinaus zur Entwicklung langfristiger Perspektiven und Problemlosungen anzuregen. In der Publikationsreihe "Zukunft von Stadt und Region" werden die Ergebnisse der Projekte und der Begleitforschung der Offentlichkeit vorgestellt.
