Die respiratorische Insuffizienz stellt eines der zentralen Probleme des Patienten auf der Intensivstation dar. Durch Verbesserung der Technik in der maschinellen Beatmung und in den augmentierenden Verfahren sowie in der medikamentosen Therapie ist es in den letzten Jahren gelungen, grosse Fortschritte in der Behandlung dieser Patienten zu erzielen. Im Band 5 des Intensivmedizinischen Seminars sind die wichtigsten Vortrage der 11. Wiener Intensivmedizinischen Tage, deren Hauptthema die Beatmung war, dargestellt. Neben der Pathophysiologie der Beatmung wird die Therapie bei den verschiedenen Ursachen der respiratorischen Insuffizienz abgehandelt. Es werden hierbei die verschiedenen Formen der Beatmung und die medikamentosen Therapien, wie die Applikation des Surfactant beim Fruhgeborenen und beim Erwachsenen sowie die NO Therapie beim Patienten mit ARDS dargestellt. Weiters werden das Fur und Wider der Hamofiltration als unterstutzende Therapie und die extrakorporale CO2 Elimination diskutiert. Insgesamt soll dieses Buch den aktuellen Stand der wichtigsten Therapiemoglichkeiten bei der respiratorischen Insuffizienz geben und praktisch relevante Information fur den Intensivmediziner bringen."
