This is a special edition of "Supplement 48" from the "Journal of Neural Transmission". The volume provides a forum for intensive discussions on the biochemical, pharmacological and clinical aspects of Parkinson's disease. The clinical effect of L-deprenyl was originally explained on the basis of irrevresible and selective MAO-B-inhibition and subsequent enhancement of dopaminergic neurotransmission. In recent years, new experimental data have challenged this concept. In-vitro and in-vivo studies are suggesting that L-deprenyl may have neuro-protective and/or neuro-regenerative properties as well.
