Das Symposium der Sektion Psychiatrie der Gesellschaft fur Psychiatrie und Neurologie der DDR am 29. und 30. Oktober 1986 in Neubrandenburg beschaftigte sich im Hauptanteil des wissenschaftlichen Programms mit der Problematik der Depression. Hirnbiochemische, psychopathologische und psycho-soziale Aspekte haben den scheinbar so scharf umrissenenen Begriff der Krankheit Depression in Frage gestellt. Kritische Uberprufungen erfolgten, und Neubestimmungen wurden versucht. Dabei ist es unverkennbar, da eine scharfere Bestimmung des Psychotisch-Depressiven erreicht werden konnte, ebenso eine Differenzierung komplexer therapeutischer Strategien. Prophylaktische Einsatze haben sich angeboten und rezidivprophylaktische Therapie erwies ihre Wirksamkeit. Das alles wollte das Symposium in wesentlichen Positionen zusammentragen, dabei insbesondere diejenigen Bemuhungen und Ergebnisse herausstellen, die im eigenen Lande erreicht werden konnten. Der Sammelband enthalt alle Vortrage des Symposiums zum Teil in gekurzter Fassung. Um zu starke Kurzungen zu vermeiden und um alle Vortrage zur Veroffentlichung zu bringen, wurde auf Literaturverzeichnisse und Zusammenfassungen verzichtet.
