Seit den Untersuchungen von Copp et al. (1962) ist bekannt, da bei den Saugetieren neben dem Parathormon ein zweiter Faktor die Calcium-Homoostase beeinflut, der von Copp et al. "Calcitonin" genannt wurde. Experimente von Hirsch et al. (1963) ergaben, da die Schilddruse die Quelle dieses humoralen Faktors ist. Er wurde deshalb auch als "Thyrocalcitonin" bezeichnet. Auf Grund der Ergebnisse von Perfusionsversuchen mit calciumreichem Blut an der Schilddruse vermuteten Foster et al. (1964), da das Calcitonin aus den sog. parafollikularen Zellen der Thyreoidea stamme. Diese Vermutung wurde von Hargis et al. (1966) auf Grund immunohistochemischer Befunde bestritten, dann aber mit verbesserter Methode von Bussolati und Pearse (1967) und Kracht et al. als zutreffend (1968) bestatigt. Die parafollikularen Zellen wurden in der Folge von Pearse (1966) "C-Zellen" genannt. Lichtmikroskopisch-histochemische, cytochemische und elektronenmikroskopische Untersuchungen zeigten, da sie bei allen untersuchten Saugern - einschlielich des Menschen - ein eigenstandi- ges Zellensystem in der Schilddruse bilden, das klar vom thyroxinsynthetisieren- den Follikelepithel abgegrenzt ist (Gabe, 1956; Sandritter et al., 1956; Ekholm, 1964; Luciano und Reale, 1964; Pearse, 1966; Carvalheira und Pearse, 1967; Welsch und Pearse, 1969; Welsch et al., 1969; Kalina etal., 1970; Kracht etal., 1970; Solcia et al., 1970).
