Synopsis

This text highlights three important topics within the field of endocrinology and development. Including contributions from Europe, the US and Japan, the first section reviews the effectiveness of growth hormone (GH) therapy for GH deficiency (GHD) and Turner syndrome. The reports indicate that current standards in recombinant GH therapy can bring final height in GHD very close to target height and that considerable benefit may be derived from GH therapy in Turner syndrome. The second section provides a review of the state of the art in imaging of paediatric endocrine disease, dealing with MRI in the diagnosis of tumours of the sellar region and the use of radionuclide imaging in paediatric endocrine tumours. Finally, the contributions in the third section examine the link between dysfunction of the stress system and psychosocial disturbances such as depression and anorexia nervosa.
