Synopsis

Detected as early as 1859 by Ludwig Mauthner, the Mauthner neurons and associated networks have become one of the most fully described neural systems. Furthermore, their role in triggering evasive manoeuvers have been thoroughly characterized. Despite this wealth of information, the system has been under-utilized as an experimental subject, with experimental investigations only done on a handful of species. These proceedings result from a symposium organized to help encourage study of this system, and reflect the directions into which some of the major investigators are advancing. The result is a collection of papers that provides a picture of recent research on the Mauthner system and, in addition, solutions to some of its previous mysteries.
