Dans le sillage des travaux incontournables de David Baguley sur Zola et le Naturalisme, le recueil intitule Naturalisme et exces visuels: pantomime, parodie, image, fete. Melanges en l'honneur de David Baguley cherche a eclairer l'esthetique naturaliste d'une lumiere nouvelle, a travers le concept d'exces. Un exces naturaliste qui devient synonyme, tout a tour ou simultanement, de theatralisation, de surcodage, de debordement des cadres generiques et/ou litteraires. A l'interieur comme a l'exterieur du mouvement litteraire naturaliste, il s'agit de mettre en evidence certaines energies naturalistes a travers quatre grandes pistes ou articulations qui n'ont ete que peu abordees ensemble par la recherche: celles de pantomime, de parodie, d'image et de fete. Chacune de ces facettes va, a sa facon, permettre d'affirmer ou de reaffirmer la predominance de l'exces, du corporel, du visuel, inscrits au c/ur d'une esthetique naturaliste foncierement moderne.

Catherine Dousteyssier-Khoze est Maitre de conferences (Senior Lecturer) a l'Universite de Durham. Specialiste du XIXe siecle et de la parodie, elle a publie Zola et la litterature naturaliste en parodies (Paris: Euredit, 2004) et, en collaboration avec Daniel Compere, Zola: Receptions comiques. Le naturalisme parodie par ses contemporains (Euredit, 2008). Ses recherches actuelles portent sur le cinema francais (Claude Chabrol). Edward Welch est Maitre de conferences (Senior Lecturer) a l'Universite de Durham. Specialiste de la culture francaise du XXe siecle, il est l'auteur de Francois Mauriac: The Making of an Intellectual (Amsterdam: Rodopi, 2006), ainsi que d'etudes sur Annie Ernaux, Raymond Depardon et Roland Barthes entre autres. Il a travaille aussi sur Zola dans le contexte d'une etude en cours sur la representation de l'urbanisation et la vie urbaine en France au XXe siecle.
