In the research on the work of Guenter Grass, little consideration has been given to his original way of structuring his novels. This study gives a careful and sensitive analysis of the compositional method employed by Grass in The Rat, his most recent full length novel. The examination culminates in the question about the function of the particular form of this novel; the method of representation stands in striking tension to that which is represented.

With perceptive insight, the form is understood in connection to Grass's world view and shown as expression of his attitude towards the political and cultural realities that he deals with in this novel.
