The book introduces the historic connections of both of Rumi and Pythagoras to music and the spiritual side of it. The revival of the Pythagorean concept of Sufism. All parts of the book come from the authors involvement with oral traditions. The book combines Vedanta philosophy with that of Sufism embracing several non-western concepts in the approach to understanding the highest purpose of human life. An innovative diagrammatic approach is given to link all parts of the book. Part one shows how knowledge and devotion are seen as working together for Man to benefit from his spiritual endeavours. Mathematics as a part of this process is introduced. An up-to-date approach to understanding music as being a Divine art is introduced. How to see the human being as a creative artist using a blend of Pythagorean and Vedanta philosophies. The position of music as a spiritual art within the spectrum of art as a whole, is outlined. How an artist may use body, senses, mind, intellect and intuition in the better production of art is clearly detailed. The second part deals with the science of Pythagorean music in every detail. This includes examination of intervals, melodic prime colours and modes, improvisation and rhythm. There is also a very good chapter in this part which exposes the various mis-conceptions which have arisen in the secular and academic spheres, during the 20th century. The final part transposes the substance of the previous parts into a full understanding of the Mevlevi (Pythagorean) Sufi approach to life and how the music is such an important factor in the Mevlevi way of life. An innovative summary of the basic tenets within the book closes this part. The Appendices deal with matters common to a number of chapters in the book, such as the mathematics of melodic intervals, a natural system of tuning to arrive at 34 notes within an octave and various lists of notes, interval values, prime colours of melody, Makams and rhythms. There is a comprehensive glossary to assist with comprehension of the specialist terms used in the book; with a word index, lists of tables and diagrams and an index of subheadings. Full bibliographical information is also provided.
