The Parrot Companion

The Parrot Companion (Paperback)

Unavailable. No reason given.

Of all pet birds, parrots inspire the most lasting devotion from their owners. This affection stems largely from the birds' intelligence, sociability, longevity and humorous characteristics. In addition to parrots, "The Parrot Companion" will cover parakeets, parrotlets, lovebirds, lories, conures, macaws, cockatoos, cockatiels, Amazons, Pionus and Caiques. Because parrots are exotic birds, and some species are endangered, the book will emphasise responsible ownership and proper concern for conservation of threatened species. Chapters will cover getting started and deciding which bird is right for you and your home/family, the characteristics of various parrot families and species - with a focus on the most popular varieties, such as the African Grey - as well as behaviour and psychology, taming and training, cages, feeding, hygiene and health (including travel health), importation and breeding and taking your bird outdoors.

Rosemary Low has been passionately involved with birds since she was a child. Neotropical parrots and the nectar-feeding species, the lories, have always been her special interest. Over the years she has published more than 20 books on parrots, including The Parrots of South America, Endangered Parrots, Cockatoos in Aviculture and Parrots, Their Care and Breeding (in three editions and three languages). Her two works on lories (published in 1977 and 1998) became the definitive works on these birds. During nearly eight years in the Canary Islands, she was curator of two of the world's largest parrot collections, Loro Parque in Tenerife, where she had more than 200 parrot species in her care, and Palmitos Park in Gran Canaria. In 1989 she was a co-founder of The World Parrot Trust and edited its magazine, PsittaScene, until 2004. She has travelled widely, speaking at avicultural conventions in many countries and observing more than 100 species of parrots in over 30 countries. She has answered readers' queries on parrots for Cage & Aviary Birds magazine for 30 years, and is very aware of the problems faced by parrot owners.
