I Avgorande ar tecknar Oswald Spengler en skoningslost kritisk bild av den moderna vasterlandska civilisationen. Vasterlandet ar statt i forfall och pa vag att do, forgiftat av overdriven rationalism, brist pa fungerande hierarkier och en allmant utbredd rotloshet. Spengler gor sina iakttagelser i mellankrigstidens Tyskland, under en period praglad av politisk oro och ekonomiskt kaos. For Spengler stod det klart att varlden inte skulle vara sig lik efter den internationella kraftmatning som var under uppsegling. Han betraktade var tid som den mest odesmattade och allvarstyngda i mansklighetens historia - en tid da nationers och folks oden skulle avgoras. De iakttagelser som Spengler gor i Avgorande ar begransar sig inte till Tyskland eller till perioden mellan de bada varldskrigen. Spengler betraktar historien ur ett storre perspektiv och drar frekventa paralleller till andra civilisationer och tidevarv. Han beskriver globala skeden som stracker sig over 1900-talet och en god bit in i 2000-talet. Det ar ingen ljus bild av framtiden som Spengler tecknar. Manniskan ar enligt honom ett rovdjur och livet ar kamp. Mansklighetens normaltillstand ar inte fred, utan krig.Var tid kallar Spengler for "varldskrigens tidsalder" - en tidsalder som han forutspar kommer att vara atminstone genom hela 2000-talets forsta arhundrade.

Avgorande ar blev snabbt en bastsaljare nar den forst kom ut i Tyskland 1933. Boken forbjods emellertid nagon tid efter utgivningen, eftersom Spengler kritiserade den nationalsocialistiska politiken i flera avseenden; bland annat delade Spengler inte nationalsocialisternas rasbiologiska utgangspunkter. Den foreliggande utgavan ar ett nytryck i faksimil av den svenska oversattningen fran 1934. Oswald Spengler (1880-1936), tysk historiker och filosof, ar mest kand for sin teori att civilisationer inte utvecklas linjart, utan cykliskt, och fods, blomstrar och dor pa ett satt som paminner om ett levande vasen. Spengler utvecklade teorin i sitt magnum opus Vasterlandets undergang som kom ut i tva volymer 1918 och 1922.
