Les Elements d'ideologie d'Antoine Destutt de Tracy font ici l'objet d'une relecture critique fondee sur une analyse detaillee des strategies paratextuelles qui ont ponctue la genealogie des differentes etapes de l'elaboration de la science des idees. Elle propose a travers une approche pluridisciplinaire de cette oeuvre une remise en question de l'apparent echec du grand projet ideologique. En effet, si comme semblent en temoigner Destutt de Tracy lui-meme ainsi que les analyses linguistiques et semiotiques qui leur seront plus tard consacrees, les Elements d'ideologie pretendent echouer en tant que doctrine en raison de l'incertitude fondamentale des signes (ecriture), les modeles theoriques developpes par Michel Foucault et Jacques Derrida permettraient de montrer, au contraire, que l' oeuvre de Destutt de Tracy elabore en definitive une economie pragmatique du signe, de l'erreur et des desirs. Loin de menacer l'ensemble du projet ideologique, le concept logocentrique d'ecriture repris tout au long des Elements viendrait ainsi legitimer une des manifestations les plus radicales du discours utilitariste liberal au dix-neuvieme siecle.

L'auteur: Fabrice Teulon enseigne le francais a Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) aux Etats-Unis. Ses recentes publications sur Antoine Destutt de Tracy et Anthelme Brillat-Savarin s'inscrivent dans un plus vaste travail de recherche sur l'economie politique des sens.
