Synopsis

Ce recit inedit de la Passion de Jesus Christ (1398) est une traduction du latin en francais que fit un translateur anonyme pour Isabeau de Baviere, reine de France (1371-1435). Extremement populaire au quinzieme siecle, la Passion Isabeau existait en vingt-trois manuscrits; on considere aujourd'hui que cette oeuvre peut contribuer a expliquer le developpement du drame religieux en France. Arnoul Greban et Jean Michel y ajouterent des elements extra-bibliques pour leurs pieces, faisant ainsi de la Vierge la deuxieme protagoniste de l'histoire de la Passion. Allant au-dela de ses sources, soit les Meditationes Vitage Christi, la Passion Isabeau surprend par son lyrisme sentimental et une approche psychologique des evenements tragiques du Calvaire dans une perspective qui ne manqua pas d'influencer l'iconographie contemporaine.
