Cet ouvrage etudie la representation de l'alterite et de l'espace dans le roman francais publie entre 1871 et 1914. L'etude montre que la representation de l'alterite de race, de classe et de genre par les Memes - masculins, blancs et bourgeois - n'est pas monolithique. Le discours dominant, qui marginalise l'Autre, est subverti par le contrediscours, qui affirme son identite. L'ouvrage analyse la representation de l'espace - empirique et corporel - et des relations intersubjectives a l'interieur des micro-espaces. Il considere l'espace de l'Autre comme un palimpseste sur lequel le Meme essaie d'inscrire son systeme de domination et il analyse les mecanismes discursifs par lesquels cette inscription est contestee.
