El libro es una descripcion de los procedimientos de transfiguracion estilistica y narrativa, y una interpretacion de la ideologia textual, de Canto de sirena, novela escrita a base de la narracion oral del informan te Candelario Navarro, por el escritor Gregorio Martinez, quien, mediante un redescubriento, revalorizacion y recreacion del patrimonio de la cultura afro-peruana, plasma con gran autenticidad un original arte de narrar que se contrapone estetica e ideologicamente a la tradicional hegemonia de la literatura denominada culta o ilustrada. A partir de una concepcion dialectica que reconcilia forma y contenido, el critico Puente Baldoceda propone una poetica narrativa en la cual toda realizacion formal en Canto de sirena es sigo de un contenido socio-historico. Esta poetica narrativa, que se nutre de las aportaciones de la narratologia francesa, la estilistica bajtiniana y el neo-marxismo americano y anglosajon, brinda una nueva perspectiva para la lectura de los grupos etnicos marginados.

El autor: Blas Puente Baldoceda es catedratico de lingueistica hispanica y literatura hispanoamericana en la Universidad de Northern Kentucky, Highland Heights. Enseno en la Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, Lima, Peru, y en la Universidad de Cornell en calidad de Spanish Lecture. Obtuvo la licenciatura en educacion y el bachillerato en lingueistica en la Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, la maestria en lingueistica en la Universidad de Nueva York, Buffalo, y el doctorado en la Universidad de Texas, Austin, en la especialidad de literatura hispanoamericana. Ha publicado monografias y articulos en las areas de lingueistica quechua y literatura peruana, venezolana, y columbiana, asi como tambien traducciones y cuentos.
