Siegfried Kracauers Jacques Offenbach und das Paris seiner Zeit ist von der Fachwelt weitgehend unbeachtet geblieben. Dabei koennte diese Biographie der Exilliteraturforschung neue Impulse vermitteln. Denn unter dem Deckmantel des Zweiten Kaiserreichs versuchte der Autor, gesellschaftliche und politische Strukturen des Dritten Reiches blosszulegen. Die vorliegende Studie bettet Kracauers Werk in seinen zeitgenoessischen Kontext ein. Sie weist unter anderem nach, dass Kracauer in seinem Versuch, Parallelen zwischen der franzoesischen Gesellschaft des 19. Jahrhunderts und der Diktatur des Nationalsozialismus herzustellen, auf die sogenannte Bonapartismustheorie zurueckgegriffen hat. Sie bestimmt ausserdem den Ort, den die Biographie innerhalb Kracauers Fruehwerk einnimmt. Und sie zeigt, welche Rolle nach Ansicht Kracauers, exemplarisch dargestellt am Beispiel Offenbachs, Kuenstler in einer autokratischen Gesellschaft spielen koennen.
