Synopsis

This volume illustrates how the retreat of the former Western European colonial powers from the Middle East and North Africa has been substituted by successive EU initiatives in favour of the region's socio-political development and attachment to Europe's single market. Indeed, successive EU policies have attempted to stabilize this troubled region, since Europe's economic prosperity and political stability depend on: the pursuit of a peaceful settlement of the Palestine Question; the quelling of Islamic fundamentalism and terrorism especially after 9/11; and the socio-economic development of the southern Mediterranean littoral states. The book explores how underdevelopment in the region could give rise to a greater influx of immigrants from North Africa and the Middle East. This would have repercussions on a Union that is currently troubled by a rise in unemployment as a consequence of the rampant globalization of the world economy.

This volume also illustrates how the gradual EU accession of the northern Mediterranean littoral countries has heightened the North-South divide, thus transforming a geographically homogenous region into a potential flashpoint arena for two cultures - Islam and the West - that are currently failing to build bridges that span the Mediterranean.
