Synopsis

The study examines resemblances and differences among the various versions of the story of Joseph as they appear in ancient and modem texts. The "originary" source is already marked by difference, and so pointing out differences is, I think, more significant than stressing sameness. For example, in the Torah and the bible, Joseph is portrayed as an arrogan and spoiled youth, inspiriting his brothers' hatred of him. In the Qur'an, however, he is regarded as being of high moral character even as a youth. The story of Joseph is the most detailed, narratively coherent episode in the Qur'an. But while the essential incidents of the story are the same in both the holy texts, it is much shorter, and the presentation, the emphasis, and the effect in the Qur'an are utterly different. The Qur'anic version of the story strips away the elements of the Old Testament and Christian stories that fave each a Hebraic or Christian focus, presenting it, instead, as a universal tidings of the unseen meant to quicken and awaken the hearts of all human beings and bring them to the straight path of belief.
