If you have a question about the archaeology of Hartlepool, these two volumes make it very clear that Robin Daniels is the person to ask. Hartlepool has a long and active history, as does the archaeological study of the town, which began in 1833. The Medieval monograph synthesises nearly 175 years of archaeology; evidence from every aspect in the life cycle of the town is discussed, from the Medieval foundations through to secular and ecclesiastical buildings, the development of the port and associated industries, physical evidence of the population and finally industrial activities.

The Anglo-Saxon monastery is deserving of its dedicated volume, as one of the major sites of importance in the Christian conversion of Northumbria. These two monographs are clearly meant as reference material, and would make a gripping read for anyone interested in the minute details of the area.
