The continued high level of interest in the most relevant of all pollutants of our water environment is shown by the range of titles selected for inclusion in this proceedings volume. Low-technology water treatment for rural communities contrasts sharply with the stringent microbial requirements for the Space Shuttle. Identification of microorganisms has moved on from classical culture techniques to sophisticated molecular procedures, although the need to demonstrate viability has resulted in a marriage between two approaches. The new techniques are now being used as a way of tracing the microbial pollution of the water environment. Risk assessment of the exposure of water users to microbes is a growing interest area but sight is not lost of the potential fiscal cost of waterborne disease. The impact of microbial water quality on developing nations and in rural areas of developed countries has been addressed with a return to examining the needs of communities with vulnerable water supplies. The undoubted importance of biofilm formation in drinking water distribution has been examined.

The effect on human health of polluted recreational water caused concern, whilst the influence of sewage discharges containing a wide range of microbes, such as Cryptosporidium, Listeria and viruses, continues to receive much attention.
