Synopsis

SHORTLISTED FOR THE WELLCOME BOOK PRIZE 2017 AND THE ROYAL SOCIETY INSIGHT INVESTMENT SCIENCE BOOK PRIZE 2017 THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER Your body is teeming with tens of trillions of microbes. It's an entire world, a colony full of life. In other words, you contain multitudes. They sculpt our organs, protect us from diseases, guide our behaviour, and bombard us with their genes. They also hold the key to understanding all life on earth. In I Contain Multitudes, Ed Yong opens our eyes and invites us to marvel at ourselves and other animals in a new light, less as individuals and more as thriving ecosystems. You'll never think about your mind, body or preferences in the same way again. 'Super-interesting... He just keeps imparting one surprising, fascinating insight after the next. I Contain Multitudes is science journalism at its best' Bill Gates

Customer Reviews

Like many of the best science books, "I Am Multitudes" succeeds by changing the perspective of the reader as to the nature of its subject matter (i.e. microbes) and how we should understand it in the light of new research findings. Ed Yong guides the reader away from the simple, militaristic view of all microbes as being either "good" or "bad" towards a richer, more complex view which sees humans and their personal "microbiomes" (i.e. the populations of microbes living on and within their bodies) as dynamic ecologies in a constant state of flux. It is in the re-balancing of individuals' microbiomes, says Yong, rather than in the "one size fits all" thinking which has traditionally driven the development of "magic bullet" antibiotic solutions to cure "generic" diseases that the future of human and global health lies. An inspirational read.
