The present book deals with the mathematical theory of two major branches of continuum mechanics - mechanics of elastic solids and mechanics of fluids. The modern trend of unified integrated approach, followed in this book, emphasizes the common basic principles and governing equations, and shows analogies between solids and fluids. Cartesian tensors are used to develop the subject in a lucid and comprehensive manner. In addition to the special virtues of clarity and conciseness of presentation, the concept of strain, strain-rate, stress, principles of conservation of mass and energy, the balance of linear and angular momentum, formulation of constitutive equations for various cases of fluids and solids and formulation of boundary value problems and uniqueness of their solutions are thoroughly examined. A number of examples and exercises to enhance the beginners understanding and appreciation of the subject are included. The book intended primarily for engineering and applied science students will serve as an introductory course in continuum mechanics. It would also be useful to Undergraduates and Postgraduates students of Physics, Mathematics Engineering and Applied Science.
